Biography

Richard MacDonald

The acrylic sculptures of MICHAEL WILKINSON are a natural outgrowth of the human yearning for beauty as exemplified in the human form. Working both in bronze and in what was until recently considered a limited medium - clear acrylic - Wilkinson is emerging as one of the preeminent sculptors of our time. Born in Oakland, California, in 1949, Wilkinson's early training was unique preparation for his art. While serving in the Air Force during the Vietnam War, he was posted in Japan where he studied Sumi brush painting and Japanese architecture. The discipline of this earlier training, the clean, spare style of the Japanese, along with the strong classical influence of the ancient Greeks are evident in all of Wilkinson's sculptures. Themes that Wilkinson explores in his acrylic sculptures include the birth and growth of romantic love, the passion of romantic love, and the discovery of the ideal self. Wilkinson's limited-edition acrylic sculptures are in a number of galleries nationwide.
